About Mane Haven

Mane Haven was founded in 2021 when Rhiannon Lewis brought a long-held dream to fruition—creating a home for rescued horses and an opportunity for others to experience the transformative power of equines.

In fall of 2024, we felt that the future held a new direction for our little backyard farm. Beginning in 2025, we will be living an experiment in homesteading with the goal of growing and bartering most of the food that we consume, minimizing our reliance on capital and corporate producers. We’re excited to learn from others who are on a similar path and to candidly share our experience.

Mane Haven Homestead is located in the homeland of the Wabanaki, the People of the Dawn. We are in the center of Mount Desert Island, surrounded by Acadia National Park and bordering on the Kittredge Brook Forest Preserve. Our setting is also home to a myriad of wildlife including fox, bobcat, porcupine and snowshoe hare as well as owls, robins, ravens, hawks and eagles. From the forest preserve in which Mane Haven Homestead sits, Kittredge Brook winds its way south, emptying into Somes Sound and flowing to the Atlantic Ocean just a couple of miles from the farm. Mane Haven Farm produces its own solar energy, and composting our animals’ manure feeds our eclectic garden.

Mount Desert Island

Halfway between Portland, Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, Mount Desert Island (MDI) is the largest island off the coast of Maine. Mount Desert Island’s miles of trails and carriage roads wind through the varied wilderness of Acadia National Park. Cadillac Mountain—where the rising sun first meets the continental United States—is the highest of 30 peaks on the island. At sea level, granite beaches and a historic lighthouse at Bass Harbor complete the iconic Maine portrait.
